Is an M Series for Me

So, you're looking for your dream car and a friend suggested a BMW M Series vehicle? That's one smart friend.

M Series sedans and SUVs combine the luxury and style of a BMW with the performance meant for the racetrack. But, before you get behind the wheel of a BMW 2018 BMW M4 Cabriolet or another M Series vehicle, let's find out if an M Series is right for you.

What's the Difference Between a Standard BMW Vehicle and an M Series?

All M Series models are based off of current BMW vehicles, but they are upgraded to a whole new level. The suspension is upgraded with performance and agility in-mind; the engine of the BMW is specially tuned to produce more horsepower and torque; performance tires and brakes are installed; and even the exterior and interior styling receive upgrades and additions. In the end, the M series models are track-ready luxury sport vehicles that are completely street legal.

What is the History of the BMW M Series?

While the M badge has a history that dates back to the early '70s, in 1978 BMW Motorsport GmbH (a subsidiary of BMW) released the M1. This was essentially road car with a race car engine and it was the beginning of the now popular M Series brand. From there, in 1979, they released further M models, including the M535i which was a performance version of the 5 Series mid-size sedan.

The M series has done nothing but grow and become more popular over the years and now almost BMW models are offered as an M Series variant.

"More recently, the division has widely adopted

turbocharging and has M-ified vehicles heretofore

thought to be un-M-ifiable, namely, SUVs." - Car and Driver

Who Needs an M Series?

It's really a matter of what you're looking for in a BMW. The entire BMW line is produced with luxury and performance as top priorities, but the M series brings performance to a whole new level. If you're an avid and confident driver who likes to go fast and even visit the track from time-to-time, an M series BMW could be just what you're looking for.

For the right driver, a BMW M series delivers the kind of drive you've dreamt about your entire life. For the doctor, lawyer, accountant, or retiree that needs a classy, luxurious vehicle with the ability to leave other cars on the road in your dust, an M series sedan or SUV should be at the top of your consideration list. There's nothing quite like driving a BMW M series vehicle on BC's winding mountain roads or hitting the track and testing your mettle.

But, Are They Safe?

All BMW models are designed with safety in-mind and that doesn't change with M series models. If you're pushing a performance car or SUV to its limits, you need to be confident and know you're behind the wheel of a safe, reliable vehicle. As an example, the 2018 BMW 5 Series, which the M5 is based off, received a 5-Star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) along with the honour of Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

"(The BMW 5 Series received the) highest rating of Superior

for front crash prevention. The 5 Series was able to avoid

12- and 25-mph forward collisions thanks to the available

Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation found

in the Driving Assistance Plus package." - Motor Trend
